Theological / Devotional

Canaan. Hebrew kena‘an. Here it is probably not used as a proper name but in its secondary sense of “traffic,” or “commerce” (see Isaiah 23:8, where kena‘an is translated “traffickers”; cf. Hosea 12:7; Zephaniah 1:11). In Ezekiel 17:4 kena‘an is applied in this sense to Babylon. The complete phrase may be translated, “unto commercial Babylon,” or, “unto a land of trade, Chaldea.” Babylon closes the list of nations with whom Israel had played the harlot.
