Theological / Devotional

To rest. The figure is that of a jealous husband completing his punishment of his adulterous wife. The retribution exhausts itself as a fire goes out after it has consumed the fuel. As the sequel indicates (verses 53, 60-63), the judgments would not be final, but the retribution would prove to be corrective.
