Theological / Devotional

Devour men no more. That is, the land itself, not the people in it (see Num. 13:32). Some have suggested that the heathen surrounding Palestine, who had seen first the Canaanites and then the Israelites uprooted, superstitiously attributed the fate of these nations to something in the land itself. They did not recognize the true cause to be the hand of God guiding the destiny of men and nations. However, in the golden age to which the prophet looked forward, the people would dwell secure. No such reproach should ever again be possible.
