Theological / Devotional

Shoot forth your branches. The land of Israel, represented by its mountains, was to get ready for the return of the exiles. The grass should spring up as food for the animals, and the trees yield their fruit to feed the new inhabitants. This is a forceful way of representing the certainty that the exiles would return.

At hand. The statement must be understood relatively. Probably about 50 years remained of the 70 predicted by Jeremiah (Jer. 25:11).
