Theological / Devotional

Names of the tribes. Chapter 48 describes the distribution of the land and closes with a description of the size of the city and of its gates.

The distribution of the land (vs. 1-7) does not follow too closely that made under Joshua (Joshua 13-19). Age or maternal descent does not particularly seem to have been a guiding criterion. The central portion of the land was to be occupied by the “oblation” (Ezekiel 45:1-7). It was flanked by the two tribes, Judah and Benjamin, that remained faithful longer than the other ten. The tribes of Reuben and Simeon, the two eldest, were placed next to them. Dan was put at the extreme north, where a part of the tribe had formerly lived. There seems to be no particular pattern for the placement of the rest of the tribes.
