Children of Parosh. Or, “sons of Parosh.” The large family unit of Parosh, with 2,172 men, stands first, as it does again in the corresponding list of Neh. 7. The name Parosh means “flea.” It is unknown how the family came to adopt this name, but it is a fact that Arab tribal heads frequently bear animal names such as lizard, gazelle, shrewmouse, etc. Similarly, a Jewish tribal head may have taken the name “flea,” a name David figuratively assumed after having spared Saul’s life at the cave of Engedi, expressing his own humility in Saul’s presence (1 Sam. 24:14; 26:20).
