The adversaries. Concerning their identity, see Ezra 4:2. Although they apparently came in a friendly guise, the historian saw them for what they really were, “adversaries,” literally, “enemies,” like Hainan (Esther 7:6) or Sanballat (Nehemiah 4:11).
