Theological / Devotional

Tatnai. Concerning the men here mentioned, see on ch. 5:3, 6. So they did speedily. Having no enmity toward the Jews, as is evident from their former actions and their letter to Darius, Tatnai and his fellow officers revealed no reluctance in carrying out the royal command. The king’s will had been made known to them in unmistakable words, and they proceeded to carry it out with zeal. In part, the rapid completion of the Temple must be attributed to their good will. This must have required Tatnai and his retinue to visit Jerusalem again and make a survey of the financial needs of the Jews and the number of sacrificial animals considered necessary for the Temple service (see on v. 9).
