Theological / Devotional

Sherebiah, Hashabiah. These men and their ten associates were Levites, but not priests as the English translation implies (verses 18, 19). Preceding “Sherebiah” is the preposition le. This is not translated in the KJV. The LXX here reads “and.” Thus translated, the meaning of the passage would be that Ezra appointed 12 chief priests, and in addition to them 12 Levites, namely, Sherebiah, Hashabiah, and ten of their colleagues — a total of 24 men — to be responsible for the safe transmission of the treasures.
