Commentary on Genesis 17:10

Theological / Devotional

Every man child. In the Hebrew this is much more of a command than the English rendering implies. Literally, “Circumcise among you every male.” The rite of circumcision is here introduced as an obligation in connection with the covenant. It was to be the sign of the covenant with literal Israel as baptism is for spiritual Israel (see Gen. 17:11; Col. 2:11, 12; Titus 3:5; 1 Peter 3:21). The one was related to physical birth; the other accompanies the spiritual rebirth.
