Theological / Devotional

Possess the gate of his enemies. Here alone among the promises given to Abraham is reference made to the “enemies” over whom his seed should triumph. This is probably a prediction that his descendants would be victorious over their enemies in the future conquest of Canaan. It may include, as well, the triumph of truth over pagan religious systems, that is, the conversion of the heathen through the missionary labor of the spiritual children of Abraham.
