Theological / Devotional

His name was called Jacob. The Hebrew word for “heel,” ‘aqeb, is related to the verb ‘aqab, “to take by the heel,” figuratively, “to deceive.” The personal name Jacob, meaning “he grasps the heel” or “he deceives,” was therefore most appropriate. It was not only reminiscent of the incident at his birth, but prophetic of his character and destiny.
