They journeyed from Beth-el. It is not known how long Jacob remained at Bethel before continuing his journey southward. His departure from Bethel was not in contravention of the command to “dwell” there (v. 1), since that word does not necessarily denote a permanent abode (see Gen. 27:44; Lev. 14:8; 1 Sam. 20:19; etc.). He was to remain there at least long enough to erect the altar and to perform his vow. Having done so, Jacob proceeded to Mamre, where his father then abode.
