Theological / Devotional

Cast him into a pit. Adding insult to injury, they stripped Joseph and threw him into a dry cistern nearby. It seems that cisterns were often put to such a use (see Jer. 38:6). The thought that he would die a painful death by starvation apparently satisfied their vindictiveness, and they paid no heed to his piteous appeals (ch. 42:21, 22).
