Commentary on Genesis 46:8

Theological / Devotional

The children of Israel. First occurrence of this expression. The size of Jacob’s family, which was to grow into a great nation, is given here, in evident allusion to the fulfillment of the divine promise with which he went into Egypt. The list of names includes not merely the “sons of Israel” in the stricter sense, but also the patriarch himself, and Joseph, with his two sons, who were born before Jacob’s arrival in Egypt.
