Commentary on Genesis 5:2

Theological / Devotional

Called their name Adam. The dignity of their being created in God’s likeness, their distinction in sex, and their divine benediction are described briefly. The only new information is the name given them by God — “man,” ’adam. From this text it is clear that the name Adam was originally generic, inclusive of both the man and the woman, and equivalent to our word mankind.
