Commentary on Hebrews 9:5

Theological / Devotional

Cherubinis. Rather “cherubim.” The word is a transliteration of the Hebrew kerubim, a plural form, and hence does not require the addition of “s” to make it a plural. For a description of the cherubim see Exodus 25:18-20.

Of glory. The cherubim are probably thus designated with reference to the glory of God that was manifested between the cherubim (see Exodus 25:22; Numbers 7:89; 1 Samuel 4:4; Psalm 80:1).

Mercyseat. Greek hilasterion (see on Romans 3:25).

Cannot now speak. The author does not wish to go further into detail, since an extended discussion of these matters is not his present purpose.
