Theological / DevotionalInto the second. The high priest was the only one who was permitted to enter the second apartment, and he could enter on only one day in the year, the Day of Atonement (Leviticus 16:2, 24; 23:27).
Not without blood. The high priest entered the most holy place, first with the blood of a young bullock as a sin offering for himself and for his house (Leviticus 16:3, 4, 11-14).
When he entered the second time, he carried the blood of the Lord’s goat, by which the sanctuary as well as the people were cleansed (Leviticus 16:15-17).
For. Greek huper, “in behalf of,” “for the sake of,” “with reference to.” In the present context huper may be translated, “to make atonement for” (see Leviticus 16:30).
Errors. Greek agnoemata, “sins committed in ignorance” (cf. Leviticus 4:2, 13). There is no warrant for the thought that there was no provision for the forgiveness of sins on the Day of Atonement.
