Commentary on Isaiah 14:9

Theological / Devotional

Hell. Heb. she’ol (see on Prov. 15:11), the figurative realm of the dead. The same word is translated “grave” in Isa. 14:11. She’ol is personified as rising to greet the king of Babylon (see v. 15). Those whom he has slain welcome him who once ruled like a tyrant on earth, sending others to their doom. Now, figuratively, the powers of evil are removed from their “thrones” on earth to descend into the shadows of death (see Rev. 20:10, 14). The same imagery is used by Ezekiel (Eze. 32:18-32). Compare Isa. 24:22; Rev. 6:15, 16 ; 19:20.
