Theological / Devotional

Give the rain. The rain after seed sowing was the “former rain” (see on Joel 2:23), which came in the autumn (see Vol. II, pp. 108, 109). The promise here includes both temporal and spiritual blessings. The nation would receive blessings in basket and in store, in the fruits of the ground and in the increase of their cattle and flocks (Deut. 28:3-5; Joel 2:24-26), and they would, in addition, enjoy an outpouring of God’s Holy Spirit (Joel 2:28, 29; Acts 2:17, 18).
