Theological / Devotional

For strife and debate. The forms of fasting were religiously followed, but the spirit of true fasting (see v. 6) was missing. Rigorous practices served only to excite the nerves and irritate the temper. Fasting such as that ordained by God (v. 6) would have led to more virtuous living.
