Commentary on Isaiah 9:19

Theological / Devotional

The land darkened. See on vs. 1, 2. The prophet views a scene of chaos and confusion. Men are utterly bewildered, and the country is filled with darkness. Passion and bitterness, hatred and vice, injustice and cruelty, have so torn the hearts of men and have so inflamed their spirits that every man is set against his neighbor. Such will be the ultimate effect of evil when “every man’s sword shall be against his brother” (Eze. 38:21) and when the hand of every man “shall rise up against the hand of his neighbour” (Zech. 14:13).
