Commentary on Jeremiah 18:16

Theological / Devotional

Desolate. Literally, “a horror.” The coming invasion would cause extreme depopulation. Since “astonished” comes from the same Hebrew root, it is better translated “horrified.”

A perpetual hissing. An idiomatic way of expressing continued derision.

Wag his head. Better, “shake his head”; not in scorn, but in sympathy for the desolate condition of the land.
