Fire. Instead of proving to be wind, God’s word in the mouth of Jeremiah is represented as becoming a fire that would suddenly and irresistibly consume the scoffers as fire consumes dry wood (see Jer. 5:9, 10; 23:29; cf. Ps. 83:14, 15; Isa. 9:18, 19).
