Theological / Devotional

A stone for a corner. This verse must not be taken literally in the sense that the building materials of the ruined city of Babylon would never be used again for construction purposes. Much of it was taken to build Seleucia, and some has been used in medieval and modern times by Arabs in the construction of several villages, which are now within the outer limits of ancient Babylon. The verse is to be understood rather as a figurative statement that the ancient Babylonian Empire would never be re-established, and that the city would end in ruins and never be restored to its former glory and importance (see on ch. 50:12).
