Desolate cities. The reference is probably to cities that the wicked man himself had desolated in his rapacity, or places under the curse of God, and thus destined for perpetual desolation (see Deut. 13:16; Joshua 6:26; 1 Kings 16:34). The latter describes the defiance of the wicked against God.
