Prevent. The word carries the obsolete meaning, “to anticipate,” or “to go before” (see 1 Thessalonians 4:15). A better translation of the form of the Hebrew verb here used would be “to meet,” “to confront,” “to receive.” Job was probably asking, “Why did my mother take me onto her lap?”
