Paths. Heb. ’orchoth, correctly rendered “paths,” or “roads,” and as such would refer to the streams winding into the desert and losing themselves in the sands. A slightly different vocalization of the Hebrew yields the translation “caravans” (see Isa. 21:13, where the word is rendered “travelling companies”). The figure, then, would show these caravans turning aside to find water in the river beds, and finding none, perishing of thirst in the barren wastes. See Vol. I, pp. 44, 45.
