Theological / Devotional

Overwhelm. Literally, “cause to fall [upon].” The expression is used for “casting lots,” and probably has such a meaning here. Lots are cast upon the orphan children who are being sold as slaves to pay the debts of their deceased father. The words are a harsh indictment of the friends.
