If I be wicked. Literally, “I am wicked,” or, “I am guilty.” That is, Job believes his sufferings show that he is accounted so. Why then labour I? A defeatist attitude was haunting Job’s thinking. Like many other sufferers, he was saying, in substance, “What’s the use!”
