Then will the Lord. The clause reads literally, “Then Yahweh became jealous.” It is assumed that the repentance enjoined had taken place. Verses 18-32 constitute God’s merciful response to the urgent appeal of the priests in the preceding verse. The promises were conditional, and because the Israelites never wholeheartedly responded to Joel’s appeal, those promises were never fulfilled for them. However, certain features of the promises will be fulfilled in principle in connection with the Christian church (see pp. 35, 36).
