Why baptizest? Here was the crux of the issue — John’s authority. He did not claim to be Messiah or one of the prophets — what right, then, did he have to pose as a reformer, without their permission? See on v. 19. The question implies acquaintance with the rite of water baptism, and at least a partial understanding of its significance (see on Matt. 3:6). Recent discoveries at Qumran reveal that the rite of water baptism was practiced at the time (see on Matt. 3:6; see pp. 63, 91). Concerning the rite of baptism itself see on Matt. 3:6; Rom. 6:3-6.
