Theological / Devotional

Philip findeth Nathanael. As the day before, Andrew brought his brother to Jesus, so Philip now brings a friend. The first impulse in the heart of one who is truly converted is to share the joy and the blessing of salvation with others, particularly with those who are near and dear. Nathanael is commonly identified with Bartholomew (see on Mark 3:18).

The law. Here, a technical designation for the first five books of the OT (see on Luke 24:44). Philip refers particularly to the prediction of Deut. 18:15 (see comment there) as meeting its fulfillment in Jesus of Nazareth (see on John 6:14).

Son of Joseph. See on Matt. 1:20, 21; Luke 2:33, 41.
