Theological / Devotional

One man should die. This principle is attested in rabbinical literature. Midrash Rabbah, on Gen. 43:8 (Soncino ed., p. 846), says, “Better one life should be risked than that all should be certain [to die].” The same Midrash, on Gen. 46:26f. (Soncino ed., p. 879), says, ‘“Better that you should be executed rather than that the whole community should be punished on account of you.’” The implication of Caiaphas’ argument was that even if Jesus was innocent, it would be to Israel’s well being to have Him removed.
