Theological / Devotional

Understood not. The disciples did not understand the purpose and import of Jesus’ present action. For a discussion of the purpose see on Matt. 21:5; cf. DA 571, 572. Even though Jesus had clearly told His disciples of His approaching death (Matt. 17:22, 23; etc.), they seem to have forgotten this in the excitement of the moment. His unprecedented act in permitting Himself to be declared “King of Israel” roused their hopes that He would, after all, fulfill their expectations and those of the multitude, declare Himself king, and assume the role of a political messiah. After the resurrection, through a study of the prophecies, guided by the illumination of the Holy Spirit, they understood the purpose of the act.
