Life everlasting. See on ch. 3:16. The Father’s commandment was that men should believe in Christ, whom He had sent into the world. Only thus could they be saved (see Acts 4:12). In a parallel statement John declared, “This is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ” (1 John 3:23). The Jews believed that salvation would come to them because they exercised themselves in the study and the observance of the Torah. Many of them rested their hope of eternal life upon their descent from Abraham. Jesus warned that only those who accepted Jesus Christ as the Son of God, the Saviour of the world, would be saved. “This is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent” (John 17:3).
