Dead already. It was most unusual to have death come so soon after crucifixion. Some victims lived for several days. Origen, who lived in the time when crucifixion was still practiced, mentions that the majority of the victims lived through the night and through the next day (Origen, Commentary on Matthew, “Series Veteris Interpretationis,” sec. 140, in J. P. Migne, Patrologia Graeca, vol. 13, col. 1793; cf. Eusebius Ecclesiastical History viii. 8).
