Forty and six years. See pp. 242, 243. Taken literally of the Temple, Jesus’ obviously figurative statement became a manifest absurdity. The Jews consistently refused to see beneath the surface meaning of His words, or to see in Him anything more than the common man He appeared to be (see ch. 7:15, 20, 33-36; see on chs. 5:17, 18; 8:52-59; 9:29; etc.). This superficial interpretation of the life and teachings of Jesus has been typical of Judaism down to the present time.
