Theological / Devotional

Into a mountain. Gr. eis to oros, “into the mountain,” that is, probably, a particularly prominent mountain or hill near the shore in the vicinity of Bethsaida. The translation “into the hills” (RSV) is also possible. The parallel passages in the Synoptics all state that it was a “desert place,” that is, an uninhabited locality (Matt. 14:13; Mark 6:32; Luke 9:12). Here Jesus hoped to be alone with His disciples after their return from preaching throughout Galilee (Mark 6:31).
