What and if? Jesus’ question is given without a conclusion. It may be taken as meaning that if they should see the Son of man ascend to heaven, then in their stubbornness they would be offended even more; or it may be understood as implying that if they should see Him ascend, it would be a proof to them that He had indeed come from heaven, and they would realize the true spiritual meaning of His words. The fact that Jesus apparently did not state the conclusion of His question is significant in itself, for either of these conclusions could have been correct, depending upon the heart of the man who might see His ascension.
