They say nothing. This is indeed a surprise. Jesus is speaking openly and boldly, and the Jewish leaders remain silent. The people propose a possible reason: that further investigation has led the leaders to the conclusion that Jesus is indeed the Messiah.

Know. That is, have they come to recognize? The people were wrong in their proposed reason. The leaders were as determined as ever to destroy Jesus.
