Commentary on John 7:39

Theological / Devotional

Of the Spirit. This verse is an explanatory parenthesis by John intended to clarify and emphasize the preceding thought. John wrote his Gospel about 60 years after the incident here related. In the interval he had seen the effective working of the Holy Spirit in the spread of the gospel.

Was not yet given. See Acts 1:4, 5, 8; Acts 2:1-4.

Not yet glorified. A reference to the death and resurrection of Jesus (see eh. 12:16, 23,24).
