Theological / Devotional

Thy record is not true. Following the Bethesda incident Jesus Himself set forth the principle the Jews here appealed to (ch. 5:31). The Law of Moses clearly stipulated that in capital cases the witness of only one man was insufficient for conviction (Num. 35:30; Deut. 17:6). The principle appears also in the Mishnah: “No one may testify concerning himself’ (Kethuboth 2. 9, Soncino ed. of the Talmud, p. 151). “An individual is not authorized [to say “sanctified”] by himself’ (Rosh Hashanah 3.1, Soncino ed. of the Talmud, p. 113).
