Commentary on John 8:23

Theological / Devotional

From beneath. See on ch. 3:31. The contrast is between this present world and heaven (cf. Col. 3:1). They spring from this lower world; consequently they are influenced by considerations drawn from the earthly, sensual, superficial, and transitory. Jesus came from heaven as man’s Redeemer, the long-awaited Messiah. Concerning this great fact Jesus sought to enlighten their minds.
