Answered. One cannot help appreciating the mildness of the answer in view of the accusation made against them. In fact, there is much to admire in both sides. When the accusers found themselves mistaken, they did not shift their ground and condemn their brethren for imprudence, although they might rightfully have done this; also when the accused had evinced their innocence, they did not upbraid their accusers with hasty, rash, and unjust surmises. Surely here was a case where a “soft answer turneth away wrath” (Prov. 15:1). How many troubles of life could be avoided if all needed the lessons of this experience.
