Theological / Devotional

Men of Jericho. Literally, “lords of Jericho.” The seven Canaanitish tribes that follow seem not to be identical with, but rather in addition to, the lords of Jericho. The word for “fought” is the same as the one translated “warred” (v. 9), and must here be considered in a similar sense. The people of Jericho did not fight actively. They confined themselves to defensive operations, which, of course, also, constitute war.
