Theological / Devotional

Straitly shut up. In the Hebrew this statement is emphatic, indicating that the gates were not only shut but also securely fastened with bolts and bars. The LXX renders it, “closely shut up and besieged.” This verse, as stated before (see on ch. 5:15), is parenthetical. It describes the condition of the city as a result of the danger posed by the presence of the Israelites at its very gates.
