Accursed. Or, “devoted to destruction” (see on ch. 6:17). The curse was such that those who took of the thing devoted to destruction themselves thereby became “devoted” to the same. This sentence doubtless was understood at the time the curse was pronounced. Furthermore, Achan had seen in the destruction of the inhabitants of Jericho the sure result of transgression. Yet in the face of all this he chose to pursue his wicked course. The utter deceptiveness of sin is revealed in the fact that it leads its victims to believe that somehow or other they will escape punishment (see Gen. 3:4; Eccl. 8:11).
