Discomfited all the host. The Midianites probably thought that they had come far enough from the scene of their rout to be secure from further attack and may have been trying to regroup after their disastrous panic. They had probably posted sentries along the way they had come to sound warning of the approaching Hebrews. But Gideon and his men outwitted the device by making a wide circuit so as to fall upon the Midianites from the eastern side of the camp. Being surprised, the Midianites attempted to flee again, but the hardy Hebrews slew many of them and captured the two kings Zebah and Zalmunna. The rest of the Midianites probably escaped in small groups into the desert.
