Theological / Devotional

Pitiful. The older meaning of this English word was rather “compassionate,” rather than “pitiable,” as now. Women who were once compassionate and loving mothers have, in their the extreme distress of the siege, eaten their own children (see on Lam. 2:20).

Sodden. That is, boiled.
